چکیده

This chapter intends to demonstrate how Applicative and Combinatory Categorial Grammar (ACCG) can be drawn on to design powerful software applications for the teaching of languages. To this end, the authors present some modules from their “pictographic translator,” software that performs syntactical analysis of sentences in natural language directly written by the user, and then dynamically displays series of pictograms that illustrate the words and structure of the user’s sentences. After a short presentation of the application and an introduction to ACCG, the chapter examines how this formalism enables the building of several high-level functions in the system, such as disambiguation, structure exhibition, and grammatical correction/validation. The chapter concludes with a short discussion concerning the potential (and limits) of this architecture with regards to multilingualism. DOI: 10.4018/978-1-61350-447-5.ch017

A Structural Interpretation of Combinatory Categorial Grammar

This paper gives an interpretation of Combinatory Categorial Grammar derivations in terms of the construction of traditional phrase structure trees. This structural level of representation not only shows how CCG is related to other grammatical investigations, but this paper also uses it to extend CCG in ways which are useful for analyzing and parsing natural language, including a better analysi...

The Role of Syntax in Vector Space Models of Compositional Semantics

Modelling the compositional process by which the meaning of an utterance arises from the meaning of its parts is a fundamental task of Natural Language Processing. In this paper we draw upon recent advances in the learning of vector space representations of sentential semantics and the transparent interface between syntax and semantics provided by Combinatory Categorial Grammar to introduce Com...

Learning to Map Chinese Sentences to Logical Forms

This paper addresses the problem of learning to map Chinese sentences to logical forms. The training data consist of Chinese natural language sentences paired with logical representations of their meaning. Although many approaches have been developed for learning to map from some western natural languages to two different meaning representations, there is no such approached for Chinese language...

Korean Parsing Based on the Applicative Combinatory Categorial Grammar

The Applicative Combinatory Categorial Grammar (ACCG) is a new approach to Categorial Grammars by using exclusively the Combinatory Logic. This extended categorial grammar that was originally developed by J.-P. Desclés and I. Biskri, allows us to tackle the problem of the Korean language parsing in which there exist many difficulties from a computational point of view. In this paper, we handle ...

Applicative and Combinatory Categorial Grammar and Subordinate Constructions in French

In this article we will present a classification and an analysis, by means of Applicative and Combinatory Categorial Grammar (ACCG), of relative, completive and indirect interrogative propositions in French introduced by ”que” and ”qui”. Applicative and Combinatory Categorial Grammar is a generalization of standard Categorial Grammar. It is represented by a canonical association between Steedma...
